Well, that was embarrassing

But could of been a lot worse! I could have a BIG FAT ticket to pay!

I made a quick run to the store for some TP before anyone else woke up this morning. On my way back home from the corner store, a cop gets on his loud speaker telling me I need a helmet! I'm thinking NO I DON'T, I'M 50 YEARS OLD, ONLY KIDS NEED THEM! This is electric, not a gas bike!

So I looked it up. I guess I do if I'm going over 20mph! Hahaha, yeah, like I'm only going to go 20mph on these busy streets with all these text idiots! I don't like the idea of getting run over by somebody not paying attention to the road! If anything I need to go faster than the BBSHD will let me go to stay safe!

So today I'll be hooking back up my speedometer, (the bike goes a little faster without it) and next week get a helmet! Yeah, it sucks, but it's better than getting Rodney Kinged by the local police with roid rage!

Project Recovery / MXUS To The Rescue!

I posted about the next project I want to get going before this Christmas a few days ago. Then I found out how expensive it would be to use the reasonably priced Bafang motors I wanted when I added shipping! It doubled the motor price and made the project as expensive as a BBSHD build! Forget that! I deleted the post! This project has been like a roller coaster ride from the start! On again, off again!

First contestant for The Price Is Right ebike will be the Sixthreezero "Ride In The Park" model 7 speed bike. I loved my Schwinn when I had it, (first bike I was going to use for this project) but this bike is at least 3x better at only 2x the price! A great deal weather you make it electric or just keep it pedal powered!

So, I'm not one to give up on a great project idea that easy! This was the first ebike I wanted to build a few years ago, but I was sent the wrong motor from the supplier and I haven't got back to it until last weekend. I have the mind to do it, and it's going to be a GREAT bike! I've improved on my original idea of a 500w geared rear drive classic styled commuter bike to add an optional 500w geared front motor making it 2wd 1000w! This is something that can be added on at a future date when you get bored with only 500w rear drive bike. Boredom does happen with small motors, and you wouldn't have to go out and buy another bike! Just add another motor to the one you already have! You're already saving money when you buy one of these!

Stole this photo from on line of the 500w front motors. Just a little larger than a typical bicycle drum break. The basic idea is that even with the 2wd version, it would be hard to tell the bike is electric. At least until you pass someone in the bike lane effortlessly, who's killing themselves to do 28mph! I would never build a bike with only front motor! They break and people fly over bars and eat the ground! I don't have a sister who's a lawyer, or a brother who writes insurance indemnity packages, so forget about it! The front motor is only available on bikes that have a rear motor for extra power and all weather traction!

Now I get to the point! Mxus motors are what I'll be using! Forget about Bafang! No need for a middle man to make a bike intended to be affordable with a reasonable amount of power impossibly expensive! That's what every other company you see in the bike stores are doing! I could be wrong, but I believe that Mxus was the company making these motors for Bafang in the first place. Mxus has been around for a long time and is known for making motors for other companies to be rebranded. It's only recently they started selling them under their own Mxus name with the 3000w motor, but that's another bike story, and a 2wd bike I want to have going for next years Christmas season!

Another photo of the Sixthreezero Men's "Ride In The Park" 7 speed bike. I LOVE this bike! "It takes me back to simpler times, before the Empire" Obi-wan Kenobi quote. One thing I want to change, and I may leave it as an upgrade option, is the brakes. I like the ones on this bike, but an easier quick release version would be better for when you get a flat tire. The Kenda tires are nice, but I'm also considering upgrades for them, and puncture resistant tubes as stock parts added to the ebike versions of this bike.

I'm still researching what seller to buy from. This could take some time. Some sellers offer it only in black, while others offer it in black or silver. I need both for different model bikes! Some sellers also offer complete package kit deals, and others just the motor. I have quite a bit to sort out for production suppliers, but for the first two motors I'll just pick what looks like a good one and drop the dime to get the project rolling. I'll try to place an order tomorrow at least for the rear motor.

I think sometimes, or most of the time, people don't realize how much time and money goes into R&D. Personally I've spent thousands over the past couple years just on research & development for the bikes the company I work for builds. Some of those bikes have changed, and my research is no longer valid. Without a doubt, it's been a roller coaster ride the past couple of years!

Saving This Here For Later MXUS V3 Turbo

I just spent quite a bit of time looking for a local (USA) supplier for the Mxus motor. Ain't one!

As far as I can tell, this is the manufacturer. At least that is what they claim on Alibaba.

Next Project Bike? 3Kw Mxus? Yeah, I Think So!

For the simple reason that the drop out space required is only 140mm with the Mxus 3Kw rear hub motor.

C&D photo does not mean that I'll be buying from them.

Other options require 150mm spacing. That's not an option if I want to keep using the Sixthreezero In The Barrel cruiser bikes. The 7 speed version has 135mm clearance in it's steel frame. Easy cheat with the proper tool 2.5mm per side.

To disk break or not? I won't be using a rim break since I'll be using a motorcycle rim and tire.
Rear Break Options:
1. Just use the regen brake. Plus = I's cheaper than anything else I can do. Minus = I don't have hills to get the most out of it.
2. Make a caliper bracket out of the custom axle brace I'll need to make anyway to use rear disk. Plus = not much more work than I already have to go threw making a custom axle torque brace for this model bike anyway. Would also be a better option for a fast street bike used for commuting in traffic. Minus = Can't really think of any except for more work in designing and building axle torque brace.

So I'm standing around at the bike warehouse today, looking at the 3Kw Cyclone project, wanting to get back at it, and I've been wanting to build a 2wd 3Kw Mxus bike for a while now. For a moment the thought interred my mind to put the Mxus motor behind the Cyclone! I may try it, but the drop out clearance is all wrong for the 3 speed bike I'm using for the Cyclone. Better off using one of the 7 speeds I have in storage for the 135mm clearance. Then one day make it into a 2wd 6Kw monster!

The way I see it, the 3Kw Cyclone has too many problems to be paired up with a Mxus rear hub motor. First is the sprocket bearing. Right off, plan on spending another $125 from SBP for one that lasts. Then the controller. You already payed for one that won't do what yo want it to do, and have to spend another $200 - $300 for one that will make the motor do what you want. PITA if you ask me!

For a fast 45MPH street bike I see no reason to deal with the Cyclone drive train issues. I'll be putting a lot of miles on mine this winter and spring with only a 14S9P battery. Next summer when business is good again, I'm thinking I'll upgrade the controller and double up on the battery in series for 104V to make it scream a bit. As I'm playing with that, I'll order the Mxus 3Kw hub motor and install it on a 7 speed ITB bike. I'll be able to use the doubled up 52V batteries in series for either bike, so no extra out of pocket costs on that.

Which bike will be the first to get over 60MPH is the question?

Mxus will be the V3 version with thicker wires. Well worth the extra $55 in my opinion!

What Range Does This Bike Get Per Charge?

Great video! Much better explanation than I've given in the past. I get too technical. This guy just drops a F-Bomb when talking about rip off sales people and puts the info on the table! Gotta love it!

Thank God That Move Is Finally Over!!!

It's like I've been moving all summer. Now that the busy bike sales season is over, so is the move! It took forever just to find a place, but we are finally in our new home!

In the next few weeks I'll be organizing stuff to get up to speed for the dead bike sales season, and for next summer when things pick up again. I have five 1000W BBSHD ebikes to build for customers in that time. Hopefully more orders will come in. I always figured that the ebike builds would take up some slack in the bike mechanic business during the winter months.

I had hoped to get the ebike business rolling this summer, but the move sort of screwed that up. Next summer will be brilliant! I'll have more bike models with more powerful motors and batteries available! Next bike season should be a lot of FUN! The year after that, I should have another shop to work out of! Yeahhhh!!!!

It's funny how such a small thing as moving can easily take two years time out of your life's plans for starting a business. I'm so happy to be out of the old place, even though it was bigger!

I will have some photo's up by tomorrow night. I have a bunch of bikes built and ready to sell, but have not had the time to post them. Late Labor Day Sale at less than 50% off brand new bikes!

Had To Share!

From time to time I see guys selling their bikes with the forks backwards.

I think if most of these guys would turn them around the correct way, they wouldn't be selling the bike! HA! I bet it rides like crap!

This is the guys add with attitude over price.
"The best word to describe this Ebike is WOW!!!!!! This bike is fast and quiet if you like extreme MTB riding ,hunting quietly or just cruising on the beach this is the bike for you. It is a Motobecane Boris X 5 with 4.5" fat tires and the Luna mid drive BBSHD electric ebike motor with off road programming it also has the Luna fusion wolf 52volt 13.5AH GA' battery. This bike will take you 20 miles on battery alone and further with the pedal assist mode. Serious inquires only. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CASH DO NOT WASTE MY TIME PLEASE $3200.00"

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T BUY YOUR EBIKE FROM A GUY LIKE THIS!
At least buy it from a guy like myself who knows what direction the friggin forks go!!! Not only that, but I would sell the same bike for $2200 with the same parts list. $2500 with a gear shifter power pause option and Lekkie upgraded sprocket, because shifting is important and so is not having the chain jump off that fugly heavy factory sunflower chain sprocket!!! And for $3200, I don't want to see any damn black zip ties on the frame, let alone a white frame! They look like shit!

I sent him a email letting him know about the backwards forks.

It's Been A Long Couple Months!

First finding a place to move, then the actual move. I'm worn out! The move will be finished by the end of next week, then I can start reorganizing stuff to build bikes again.

Some bad news just came across my work bench yesterday. The 630 Everjourney 7 speed I've been developing for ebike conversion over the past year and a half will NOT be available. All I'll say about it is that they are no longer suitable for the conversion. I still have a limited supply of the older models available for conversions, but that will be the last of them. Yeah, to say I'm disappointed with the change would be a massive understatement, especially considering the time I've put into the project.

(The ladies Teal version in photo.)

I've removed these bikes from the side bar available ebike listings. If I want to offer a similar bike I will have to try the more expensive Electra version.

Oh Yeah! 25Ah 52V 14s9p pack just arrived and charging!

3K Cyclone finally has some POWER!

Guess what wire harness I'll be working on tomorrow?

Well, first thing I have to build another bike to sell this weekend, a Sixthreezero In The Barrel 7 speed (my favorite donor bike to use for a 3 speed IGH conversion for Ebikes). Then I have to finish the custom wire harness on the 750W BBSO2 bike for the company, and build a few bikes for the bike store for this weekends sales. After all that, I may get a chance to work on the 3000W Cyclone In The Barrel ebike!

My family is in the process of moving, so it's been tough to find the time to work on the 3K Cyclone. I moved the project to the warehouse bike shop to complete it. I figure this way I can work on it a little every day to get her done.

Believe it or not, when a bike mechanic gets home from a long day of working on bikes, the last thing on his mind is to work on more bikes!

Until my family's relocation is complete, I think I'll just build all my bikes at the shop. Home shop is closed until further notice. 100% of my spare new parts are going into storage until we find a place. 100% of my bike tools are going to the shop.

So back on battery topic! I want to see how it works on my BBSHD 3 speed In The Barrel bike for a couple weeks before switching it to the Cyclone version anyway, so no rush to get her done other than my desire to go faster, and make my daily commute to the bike shop safer by being able to keep up with traffic.

Eventually I'll change the controller and build my own 72V pack for the Cyclone. I have my battery welder but not the time at the moment. Then the 52V will go back to the BBSHD until I change it's controller and bump it up to 72V as well!

So to end this long and boring post, wish us luck in finding a new place with a decent garage to build bikes and ebikes so I can open up the Home Shop again. I'll get some photo's of the progress tomorrow.

SBP Cyclone 2000W

Great deal on the 2000W Cyclone motor at Sick Bike Parts for $189!

I need to order the heavy duty replacement parts from SBP for the crummy factory parts anyway. I think the BIG price difference is due to the SBP motor offered with square taper BB, and the one I got from Luna is set up for an ISIS BB. Next one I get will have the square taper from SBP so I can tell for myself if the ISIS setup is worth the extra money. It is smooth as silk with zero chain ring side to side movement when pedaling.

I got so excited when the 3000W motor became available, I ran down to get the bigger motor and forgot to take photo's of this one with the motor installed. This is the company sales photo of the bike without motor.

I've sort of skipped past my 2000W motor in my build process. I have it mounted on a 7 speed Firmstrong Bruiser. I mounted it to the bike sometime around last Halloween 2017 before getting started on the 3000W motor around Christmas. After I finish the first mock up on the 3000W motor I'll get back to the little monster.

I think these little guys have a lot of potential on different model bikes due to their small size. Much smaller than the 3000W Cyclone. They can be used at under 1000W (as if anybody wants to do that) up to 2000W and beyond with some overvolting.

I'll probably use a suspension front end and add a set of ape hangers to the project. I'll also change the controller and throttle and use a 60V battery in a custom case. This is what I want to try out for the controller on this bike. https://lunacycle.com/asi-bac-800-controller/ This heavy duty controller is so small that I may be able to hide it under the bottom bracket.

Little motor mounted in frame up against the seat tube, little high power controller, and one BIG battery! This will be one fun bike! Should be capable of 50+mph! In the future I'll be adding tubless tires to all my ebikes. It just makes sense. Why waste time fixing flats when miles from home or late to work?

Higo Connectors

I'm saving this here for quick reference.

Zip ties on frame don't cut it! On this model bike and several others, the wires will go in frame for a clean look.

I'll be building my own ware harnesses for my own bikes, but that's just not going to happen at the shop where time is money. We need to keep my labor costs down enough for me to build two or three ebikes per day. That and I don't really have anywhere to do the soldering at work. It's a busy shop in the warehouse and the warehouse gets priority. For that reason I'll need to get some quotes on custom harnesses from these guys. Plug and play with a wire harness that fits the bike and looks good! Not that bird nest look bikes get with any Bafang kit harness!

Arduino Spot Welder for 18650 Battery Welding

I'll finally be able to make my own ebike batteries!

 Such a small electronic device!

I've been wanting to pick one of these up for a long time now! I finally ordered one with all the accessories to use two power setups. This isn't a $20,000 18650 spot welder. It's only a little over $150 USD with all the accessories, and outperforms the cheap Chinese transformer spot welders.
Made in Germany.

The case for the unit.

3000W Cyclone Ebike Progress

The bars came on Saturday. Put them on along with springer forks today.

Hell yeah! That's what I'm talking about! This is the look for the bike I've been wanting to see!

I'll need to make the cables longer to fit, but I figured I would have to do that anyway, so no big deal. I've been waiting to do all my custom wire harnesses until I found a set of ape bars I like. Now I've found them, time to start the custom wiring!

I'm thinking about changing the beach bars on the BBSHD to a nice set of mountain bike bars. The ape hangers won't allow me to pop a wheelie the normal way, but the Cyclone should be able to do that all by itself.

I figured out how to hide the wires and plugs today after I finished what I could with the controls and bars. Until I make the battery box (still need to get a few tools) I'll fabricate a small box the same shape as the controller and mount it on top of the controller. This should work great to hide the birds nest until I come up with the in frame battery box.

Above photo of what the bike looks like from the factory in it's stock form. I have this one for sale right now without ebike kit. I'm letting it go for half price $200 if anyone is interested.

3000W Cyclone Bike Project Update

It's been a long time now since I've started this project bike with the 3000W Cyclone motor! It's about time I got started on finishing it!

From my first post on this project. Judging by the two bikes in the background with the bows on them, this must have been Christmas day.

Luna is great at a lot of things. For me, It's usually being out of stock on everything I want! So I ran down to the warehouse the first day the 3000W Cyclone was back in stock! I wanted to ride up this Thursday to pick up a couple BBSO2's for the bike shop, but guess what? Out of stock...

Fact be known, I've been too busy selling bikes and torture testing the BBSHD bike with my daily commute to and from work. I'm bored with the HD, so now is the time to finish project 3K Cyclone!
Quote: More Powwwweeeerrrrrr!

The daily commuter bike with the BBSHD motor mounted in frame.  I use back pack battery.

I've been beating the hell out of this bike for the past six months! All good! They don't see or hear me coming, but they DO see me passing them! Sometimes I get stuck at a light that's long enough for them to catch up. Then all the same questions are asked. "What is that" "How much" "How far" etc.

 Progress so far. Looking good!

I made some time this week to work on it after work. Normally I'm building and selling regular bikes, but sometimes you need to take a break. Especially on Mothers Day Sunday when everyone is waiting on you, and you're waiting on two customers who never show to pick up the bikes! Yeah, that's a pisser! "No bike for you!" Time to pay retail or get some rusty old junk for the same price I'm selling these brand new bikes!  I really enjoy selling new bikes at 1/2 price to people. I like happy customers! I'm taking the whole week off from selling bikes. I haven't been feeling well the past week or so, and don't have the patience for no shows, tire kickers, and nit picking penny pinchers. Half price just ain't good enough in this age of entitlement. I get so many offers for $50 for a brand new $400 bike that It gets me angry. Then they get offended when I laugh at their offer! Get a clue! Anyways, that's what's been going on the past week, and why I've had time to work on this bike.

Chains, chains, everywhere there's chains! Primary & secondary chains.

Last Monday I was on a mission to make some progress no matter what. I had two doughnuts at work for breakfast, then nothing until I was done working on the Cyclone bike around 8pm. I started with the chains.

Yeah, the factory chain tensioner is gonna go, and so is the factory freewheel bearing! Sorry Cyclone, but they are junk!

At the moment I just want to get her running. I've purchased a new tensioner, and will install it when I take it back apart to change the bearing with a SBP Heavy Duty unit. I already knew I would be replacing these two parts before I started building the bike, but I believe in testing almost all of the factory parts myself before making changes. The Cyclone supplied ignition switch on this build will be the exception. It's not even junk, it's complete garbage! I have a spare part I'll use for a key switch from the last Harley Davidson Shovelhead bike I built that will work perfectly. It's even smaller than the cheap garbage that came with the motor, and metal! I'll also be using a 3 way switch from the same bike. I used it to go from high beam to low beam on the headlight. Now it'll be used to go from low speed (beach strand cruising), medium default speed, and high speed modes. I'll mount them in the battery box I still need to build.

Cut out of Luna 52V 24Ah battery.

Until I start making my own batteries, and just to get her running around 40mph, I've decided to get the Luna 52V battery. The box I make for it on this bike will also fit the BBSHD bike, so no effort will be wasted to do this temporary installation. In fact, the boxes will be the same for both bikes in the end. The HD will get the 52V, and the Cyclone will get the custom made 72V. This bike has a lot of room in frame to stuff everything, but a 20Ah 72V battery will take up every inch of space with the 3k Cyclone motor!

Batman battery display, SA three speed thumb shifter, Cyclone thumb throttle, and ebrakes with half grip.

This bar setup was as simple as I could make it. Less is more when talking about stuff on handlebars! I hate bars all filled up with stuff! Now I'm waiting on a set of mini ape bars to finish the deal and start with the wiring.  Nothing wrong with beach bars, I just like the mini ape bars better.

The SA three speed shifter makes this all possible.

This bike comes with a half twist shifter. I wouldn't of been able to use the Cyclone thumb throttle without the SA mod. Even without the thumb throttle on the right side (I need to find a LH thumb throttle) I still use the SA on my three speed ebike builds because it's so much nicer than the rev o shift half twist units that come with the bikes! With a Bafang style RH thumb throttle mounted on the LH side the way I like it, I could use full sized grips both left and right. ADHD don't like half grip on right and full grip on left!

"Chain Line" In the frustrated voice of Col Klink From Hogan's Hero's!
You can tell by my shoes that all my money goes into bikes and bike parts!

Next mod? I don't like the chain line. Before I do any of the other mods to the factory parts, I need to see if it works. At worst, I'll have to get the 44/44/32 Triple Chain Ring, swap the inside 32 ring with the middle 44 ring, and consider the 32 ring as a spacer. Assuming it's possible to swap those two rings! Mo money! That would do a nice job at correcting the chain line angel. Also, I would have to relocate the controller. You can see from the above photo how little clearance the chain has from the controller the way it's set up now. No big deal, just a matter of learning how this bike model likes to be set up. I doubt that 3/8" chain line deflection will be a big deal on this rigid extended frame bike, but it may be? Only one way to find out. Get er done and running! If this were a 7 speed bike, I would already have relocated the controller.

BBSHD Sixthreezero Around The Block 3 Speed bike in front, same bike with Cyclone 3k motor in back.

I'm laughing about this. The Cyclone bikes seat is randomly high enough in the above photo as though I would ever need to pedal the bike. The BBSHD bike seat is also too high for that motor. I never pedal it! When the mini ape bars show up, I'll drop them both all the way down. I mean, whom I kidding? Hahaha! Don't need to pedal either of these bikes unless you want to get some exercise!

Da Bars!

Notice the 1" clamping point for the neck! Good luck finding these yourself! Only took me over one year to find them! I have the fist two sets on the way! Forget about the Electra mini ape bars! $50 because you have to get the bars for $30, and a $20 BMX style neck to make them work due to the 7/8" (22.2mm) size clamping point! Haha! Haha! Hahahaha! Score! Now if only the crappy Cyclone thumb throttle will fit! If not, then I'll go in the opposite direction and do a set of race bars styled like an old set of board track racer bars. I want to do this anyway, so no loss. It's just one of those things I need to know before making a custom wire harness jig to fit all bars on all bikes. I don't want to make a wire harness jig to fit every bike. "There can be only one!" 1980's movie quote from Highlander, but it's the fact with wire harness jigs!

Springer forks actually add a nice little bit of bounce to a front end! This bike was using a BBSO2 750W motor. The motor is mounted under frame for lack of eccentric BB adapters at the time. Can be mounted in frame same as the BBSHD in some above photo's with the adapter set.

I'll also be using a repop set of Schwinn style springer forks on the Cyclone bike. Same as in above photo. These repop springers are good quality. For $10 less, you get bent up junk that never aligns correctly. Same springer forks for $40 more, and you get a set of safety washers and two drilled holes in the tubes. I found a couple brands of rim breaks to work with them and I'm going to give them a try. If they don't live up to my expectations, then a front SA drum or Hydraulic disk break will be used.
